Report No. 2 on damage caused by earthquakes with epicenter in Kumamoto region, Kumamoto Prefecture
Apr. 22, 2016
News Release
The current status of operations of Aisin Seiki and our affiliated subsidiaries in the Kumamoto region Aisin Kyushu Co., Ltd. (referred to below as "AIK") and Aisin Kyushu Casting Co., Ltd. (referred to below as "AIKC"), is as follows.
1. Status of damage
(1) Employees
Aftershocks have been occurring continually in the affected region, so we have been verifying the safety status of our employees on a daily basis.
As of 11:00 AM, April 22, the safety of all AIK and AIKC employees has been verified, and we have had no reports of serious injuries.
(2) Buildings and facilities
Since the earthquake, none of our buildings have collapsed. Inside buildings, there were cases of broken window glass, collapsed walls, manufacturing equipment shifting out of position, and objects falling from shelves.
Since April 17 we have begun going into production zones, once safety has been verified, and inspecting them to determine the degree of damage, but going inside buildings to inspect the status of damage closely has proved difficult because of repeated aftershocks.
Aisin Kyushu Co., Ltd.
・Auxiliary manufacturing equipment (wiring, piping, etc.) inside buildings has been damaged
・Electrical transformer facilities on the AIK premises have been damaged, and supply of electricity inside AIK buildings is currently suspended
・Since April 19, a crane has been used to move large pieces of equipment and molds for manufacturing, etc. out of the buildings
Aisin Kyushu Casting Co., Ltd.
・No major damage to buildings or facilities, etc.
・Broken electrical transformer facilities were repaired on April 20, and power supply has been restored
(3) Status of production
Immediately after the earthquake on April 14, employees were evacuated for their safety, and since then manufacturing operations have been suspended at the two companies (AIK and AIKC). At this point it is not clear when it will be possible to resume operations.
2. Resumption of production
(1) Resumption of production
Since the earthquake, in addition to sending humanitarian assistance in the form of water, food and other relief supplies, we have dispatched 339 employees to the affected region to assist with relief and reconstruction efforts.
Aisin Kyushu Co., Ltd.
・We have primarily shifted this company's production to other facilities because it is evident that it will take some time before production at the site can be resumed.
Aisin Kyushu Casting Co., Ltd.
・Power supply has been restored, and preparations for resumption of operations are underway.
(2) Production at alternate sites
To enable the swift resumption of product supply to our customers, we have commenced production at alternate sites, primarily affiliates in the Kyushu region and the Aisin Seiki plant in Aichi Prefecture. Also, we have already begun importing some products from overseas to fill the gap left by suspension of operations.
We are currently looking into the issue of how these events will affect Aisin's consolidated business results.
