News Release

Aisin Seiki Co., Ltd. and the Indian Institute of Science (hereinafter "IISc") concluded a joint research agreement on artificial intelligence (AI).

Established in 1909 by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group and called the "Father of Indian Industry," IISc is an educational and research institute in the sciences and in engineering with a history of nearly 110 years. It currently has approximately 500 faculty members, approximately 2,750 doctoral students and approximately 950 master's students in 42 departments covering most areas of basic and applied sciences. Its research on AI, in particular, is among the best in India.

Recently expectations have been growing that AI will be put into effect in society with the emergence of deep learning and the subsequent rapid development of AI. However, since most present AI systems are designed based on fixed data sets (domains) and purposes (tasks), they have an essential problem in that they cannot adapt to situations that exceed their design assumptions such as an unpreceded environmental change.

To solve this problem, Aisin and IISc will work on the versatility of AI systems. By introducing versatility, AI systems may begin to have adaptability equivalent to that humans have, which will enable AI systems to utilize domains and tasks obtained in past experience for future experience. Making the most of Aisin's extensive domain knowledge and IISc's advanced expertise, we will firstly launch a study of unsupervised domain adaptation, a kind of transfer learning, in October, and plan to develop it into a study of continual learning in the near future. We, at the same time, aim to make use of the results of the studies in a wide range of fields, including quality inspection, predictive maintenance and connected cars.

Aisin will further accelerate collaboration with companies and universities across the world that have advanced technical capabilities and thereby help promote sustainable industrialization through engineering innovation.
