Road Maintenance and Management Support Service "Michi-log" Equipped with New AI-based Functions

Mar. 28, 2023

News Release

On April 1, 2023, AISIN will release the road maintenance and management service Michi-log 2.0, which is equipped with new functions that utilize AI. It will be introduced in Okazaki City and Kariya City, where demonstration tests have already been conducted, and full-scale operation will begin.

The comprehensive road maintenance and management support service "Michi-log" is designed to detect road abnormalities, such as pot holes, from data collected from vehicles during driving and images taken by in-vehicle cameras, offer planning support for road repairs, and implement the necessary measures. It improves the efficiency of conventional road maintenance and management work.

In addition to conventional AI image recognition on the cloud, Michi-log 2.0 uses edge computing*1 to enable intermediate judgments to be made on the vehicle-mounted device, making it possible to detect road surface abnormalities with even higher accuracy.
Meanwhile, it is equipped with a color-coded display function for road surface damage. The IRI*2 and crack rate are calculated by AI, and the damage status is color-coded on a map. By visualizing the damage situation in a more timely manner, the service helps improve the efficiency of road maintenance and management work of local governments.

AISIN will continue to promote technological development to improve the environment and society, thereby realizing the AISIN Group Philosophy:  Inspiring “movement,” creating tomorrow.

*1 A method or concept for processing data from sensors, devices, etc. at the terminal itself or at a location close to the site (edge) where data occurs.
*2 IRI (International Roughness Index): an index that indicates the flatness of a road surface.
