Initiation of Eco-Friendly Biomass Block Demonstration Using Giant Miscanthus

9th December, 2024

IMRA Japan Co., Ltd. has joined the "AISIN-Hokudai R&D Lab" at Hokkaido University's industry creation laboratories and is conducting joint research on Giant Miscanthus with the Research Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University. Giant Miscanthus is a high biomass-producing plant, related to silver grass, which grows to about 3-4 meters in a year even in cold regions. Recently, in collaboration with The Nippon Road Co., Ltd., we have created sidewalk paving blocks using Giant Miscanthus as a raw material and started a demonstration test at the bicycle parking lot at Hokkaido University's Global Research Center for Food & Medical Innovation (FMI). By replacing concrete, which has high CO2 emissions during manufacturing, with biomass that absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere, significant CO2 reduction effects are expected.
